BOOKS I HAVE READ

Over the past 45 years (beginning in 1977) I have become an avid reader of fiction books. Now I am addicted to reading fiction by a multitude of authors. My reading habit began when my 2nd wife, Mary Ann, left me, with our son, Chris, to live with her parents.

This meant that, once again, I was lving alone, which means I had quite a bit of "free time". Normally, being maried means I was almost always interacting with my wife and doing thing together and hardly ever alone.

Libraries have books for the public to read. So, I went to the Upper Arlington, OH, library (where I was living) and asked a librarian if she could suggest some authors who wrote spy and thrilerr stories. She suggested Rober Ludlum as a good author to start with. Naturally, all the library books were "hard-back".

Soon I was reading, or had read, several of his books and was "hungary" for more. Now, I have read books by over 90 authors who together wrote over 500 books.

Jeanne and I moved to Anderson, South Carolina to to build our new home on a nice lot on a cove of Lake Hartwell. We moved to "escape" the Ohio winters and to be closer to Jeanne's oldest son, Larry, who lived in Easley, 25 minute from from our new home.

Anderson has an exceptional county library. I began checking out books on a regular basis.

Anderson, fortunately, had a used paperback books store, the Book Exchange, where you could buy and exchange books. Books were 50% of book price and the exchange was 25%, a credit. You could buy lots of books really cheap and after reading them, return them for credit on you next purchase. It soon became "standard" to turn in 6-10 books and buy 5-8 that I hadn't read yet.

By buying, as yet unknown (to me) author's books, I eventually discovered most of the author below. Using the internet to look for "Authors that write like ________", I have found many other great authors.

All the fiction books were shelved, almost to the ceiling and down to the floor, along three walls with an island between that held books too. They also has a small column of recently returned books where you could find new releases people purchased elsewheres and, after reading them, exchanged them.

Unfortunately, the Book Exchange closed their door forever late in 2021. There was another "book exchange" in but it was very small (about 10% the size of the Book Exchange) with a limited number of authers. So, I had three choices, all of which is used.

    1. buy paperback book at the local WalMart or Books-A-Million,
    2. visit the Anderson Country Library, or
    3. buy paperback books on the internet.

I chose #2, Anderson County Library as they have a huge collection of the authors I like and similer authors.

Over these past 45 year(begining in 1967) I have compiled a list of authors whose books I have read along with their various title. It is amazing that I compliled a list of 93 authors along with their 472 titles of their books.

My Top 17 are listed below along with a list of their books, 547 total. I orginally wanted my top 10 but there were so many great authers after 10 that I just could stop there.

Here is a list of those authors whose books I have enjoyed most. They fall into three catigories, Spy, Thriller, and Crime (court rooms), and sometime a combination of all three.

Vince Flynn
7 Titles*

* - Number of his books I have read.

"After college he went to work for Kraft General Foods where he was an account and sales marketing specialist.

In 1990 he left Kraft to accept an aviation candidate slot with the United States Marine Corps. One week before leaving for Officers Candidate School, he was medically disqualified from the Marine Aviation Program, due to several concussions and convulsive seizures he suffered growing up. While trying to obtain a medical waiver for his condition, he started thinking about writing a book. This was a very unusual choice for Flynn since he had been diagnosed with dyslexia in grade school and had struggled with reading and writing all his life.

Having been stymied by the Marine Corps, Flynn returned to the nine-to-five grind and took a job with United Properties, a commercial real estate company in the Twin Cities. During his spare time he worked on an idea he had for a book. After two years with United Properties he decided to take a big gamble. He quit his job, moved to Colorado, and began working full time on what would eventually become Term Limits.

Like many struggling artists before him, he bartended at night and wrote during the day. Five years and more than sixty rejection letters later he took the unusual step of self-publishing his first novel. The book went to number one in the Twin Cities, and within a week had a new agent and two-book deal with Pocket Books, a Simon & Schuster imprint."

"Robert K. Tanenbaum is the author of thirty-two books-twenty-nine novels and three nonfiction books: Badge of the Assassin, the true account of his investigation and trials of self-proclaimed members of the Black Liberation Army who assassinated two NYPD police officers; The Piano Teacher: The True Story of a Psychotic Killer; and Echoes of My Soul, the true story of a shocking double murder that resulted in the DA exonerating an innocent man while searching for the real killer.

The case was cited by Supreme Court Chief Justice Earl Warren in the famous Miranda decision. Steve Berry
12 Titles*

* - Number of his books I have read.

"Steve Berry and his wife, Elizabeth, travel the world both researching and promoting his books. One comment they hear repeatedly concerns the dwindling supply of funds available to preserve our heritage. So Steve and Elizabeth launched History Matters to assist communities around the world with restoration and preservation.

What if these rarities are not preserved? The answer is clear. Those links to our past will be irretrievably broken. Money for historic preservation and conservation is one of the first things cut from both governments' and individuals' budgets. Steve and Elizabeth thought it was time to come up with an innovative way to raise money.

On April 4, 2017, Steve and Richard Stamm, Curator of the Smithsonian Castle and a character in The Lost Order, led a group of 50 people on a special behind-the-scenes tour as a History Matters fundraiser for the Smithsonian Libraries of the Smithsonian Castle. The group explored all of the Castle's nooks and crannies, visiting secret places the public never sees, places that are part of The Lost Order. Prior to that, earlier in the day, Steve and Rick led a group from C-SPAN on the same tour which was broadcast on Sunday, August 13 on C-SPAN3."

Some of his books are somewhat "hard" to get through. But, still a very interesting author and one to consider in the future.
